CHAPTER 10

“FINDING MOON”

The “male’s trip” is usually about 24 moons [about two human years]. BlazeTail was sad about PatchDust leaving about two moons ago, but she occasionally saw him at each Gathering once in awhile. Lately, she hasn’t seen him. She’s starting to grow away from him, and her dad. But it is nice, having the boys out of camp for that amount of time. Blaze was pretty much the protector of the camp. She knew what spells to cast and when to cast them. No one ever intruded anymore. It was strange.

Blaze had snuck out this morning to hunt for herself. It felt great to be out of the cage that was CloudClan camp. She wanted to escape again! So badly, but Whisp was holding a meeting.

“Whisp? Whisp? May I be excused?” Blaze stood up and asked boldly. “May I ask why, BlazeTail?” the leader asked as each she-cat looked her way. “I don’t know.” She stuttered while lying. BlazeTail could get away with lying; besides the other cats may think she needed to get an herb or cast a spell. She just wanted to get out of there! “Your excused, Blaze. Be back before sunrise!” Whisp meowed, but Blaze was already out of the camp.

“Moon! Moon! Wake up! Moon! It is breakfast time!” Moon woke up and smiled at his mother, Cedar, who still insisted on waking him up. Although Moon had his own tree, his mother would walk a mile to make sure he got up in time.

‘’Okay, okay! I’m up!” he smiled at his mom again. He paused at the base of his tree, where his father carried a basket of berries. “Berries again, Winnie?” he asked. Moon’s dad gave him a glare, and replied with a yes. Moon sighed. He looked in the direction of the cat clan camp. “Will I ever get to go back?” he asked. “Ever live the life I’m meant to live?” Cedar put her tail on his shoulder. “We could have eaten you Moon. But, we raised you.” Moon sighed and rolled his eyes at this statement that had been said a thousand times! “I know, but now, wouldn’t you say I could at least ask the cats? Besides, if they say no, I can just come back and do what I’ve been doing all my life! Life is about risking something!” Moon meowed. “Alright. I love you moon. Always keep your name, alright, as a remembrance of us.” Moon nodded. “I will definitely see you again!” he touched noses with both raccoons, and raced off towards the force-field light.

Blaze raced out of the camp and into the forest. She wondered what would be out there. You never know, the male’s trip could have moved to a location near camp this moon! As she ran she saw two eyes above the canopy layer of a tree. Patch! Patch loved to climb trees! “PatchDust! Oh my gosh! I haven’t seen you in forever! How have you…” Blaze stopped when she realized they were blue eyes, not orange. “Oh, sorry about that. I thought you were…” THUD! The calico tom fell from the tree. “Oh my! Are you ok? Let me help you!” Blaze raced to the hurt-looking tom.

“I’m ok, really.” He said while shaking his pelt. “I was just…” he stops when he realizes Blaze is intensely sniffing him. She backs away suddenly, urging him to come with her. “I smell raccoons! On you!” grabbing him by the ear, she sprinted around camp, to the other side. “I’m BlazeTail by the way!” she said with her mouth full. “Moon.” He replied in pain. Blaze tail stopped for a second in awe, and then continued on her way.

As he was being dragged, she asked him a question. “Just Moon? No, Bracken at the beginning or Tail at the end. What clan are you from anyways?”

Moon stared at her for a few moments. “I, uh… am not from a clan. I’m an uh, oh! I’m a rouge!” He said, smiling, making Blaze feel uncomfortable.

“Rouge? Then why am I helping you?”
“You’re not, really, and,” he said as freeing himself from her grip. “ I’m really not rouge. I am, I mean I was, living with raccoons. But, I have come to ask one clan, if I could join.”
BlazeTail looked at him and sighed. “Of course, you’d never want to join CloudClan….?”

Moon’s face looked as if he had been given free prey for 900 moons! “Would I ever?!” he leaped and tackled Blaze.

They both heard a rustle in the bushes. Then they heard laughter, and then silence.  Blaze saw a pair of eyes. One yellow and one blue and red. “Blaze?” it spoke and a black head popped out. “What are you doing!?” he growled at Moon. He leaped out at Moon. “You don’t smell like CloudClan. Blaze? Was this an assault?”

Then a second pair of eyes and a grey head came out of the bushes. “Blaze? It’s me! Patch!” Blaze just nodded her head and focused on Moon.

“And, you smell like raccoons. Blaze, this kid smells like raccoons and assaulted you! You will never speak of him or too him ever again!” he turned his head back to Moon. “Listen boy, my son was taken by raccoons since he was wee little; we have never seen him since. Now, get out of my territory, you rouge!

Moon stared at him, processing what he had said. “Raccoons?”

“Get! Before I really hurt you!”

CHAPTER 8

“IT WILL BE FINE AFTER ALL, I HOPE…”

So many moons had passed since that day. TornadoTail still couldn’t stop thinking about it at first but, with all the chaos in having to do what was sort of a “fake” proposal and all that.  In the mean time, it was the day of Amber’s kitting! Tornado was scared, happy, sad, and nervous. He didn’t know what to think. It also was the day that her best friends were to become Warriors.

TornadoTail, CrystalPaw, TanglePaw, and Whisp were waiting outside the Medicine den. TornadoTail was pacing, like an average father would. They all were relieved when they heard the mews of kits. TornadoTail rushed forward, stopping at the entrance of the den, stopped by Cucumber. “I was just going to say that Amber, and her two kits, are perfectly fine. Come on in.” the medicine cat said, her eyes glistened with relief.  When Tornado ran into the den, he saw his two beautiful kits, one amber, and one calico. Once he had stared at the pair for about 10 minutes, he was lost in conversation with his mate. As the two of them talked and talked, and as the rest of the waiting party made their way into the den, the calico kit slipped away into the forest around the camp. He didn’t know what he was getting into.

It didn’t take long for Amber to notice that one of her babies was gone. She sprung to her feet and ran around in circles. “No, no no! I can’t believe I let this happen! I’ve just had my babies for an hour, and one’s gone!” she hissed. “What are you talking about Amber, they’re both still…” TornadoTail stuttered. “Here” he shot a worried look at Amber.

The calico kit squirmed around the forest floor as fast as his little body could take him. He crawled until he felt something soft against his skin. It was a raccoon. “What on earth are you doing out here! It’s leafbare! You look like a newborn!” the raccoon paused and looked around. She sniffed the air. “Oh, well. I guess you’ll die.” She said, slowly walking away. She knew that if she took this kit, bad things would happen to her, for raising a cat. “But I can’t just leave you! Oh, where’s your mother?” she mumbled as her mate walked past. “Cedar! Why are you talking to a cat! Eat him! It will give you lots of protein!” he said. It was true; raccoons sometimes ate the small newborn offspring of almost any animal. “No, Winnie! He’s a newborn, and it’s leafbare!” she stuttered. “Exactly! Two more reasons to eat him! We will need the extra food, and nobody will care!” Cedar looked at the calico kit with caring eyes. “No, Winnie. I’m going to raise him. I don’t care if it gets us kicked out of the gaze. I don’t care.” She said as she scooped up the kit and scrambled away. “Us?” Winnie called, bounding after her.

All the cats in the clan went to go find the newborn, he didn’t have a distinct scent yet, but, Amber still knew. “Follow this trail she said, almost fainting. TornadoTail scooped her onto his back. “CuccumberWhisker, please stay with BlazeKit.” He begged. She nodded. “This way!” Amber called. All of the cats kept going straight. Amber leaped off of TornadoTail’s back. She limped another way. Then, when she got about a few yards into the trail, she mourned. “What is it?” TornadoTail asked, leaping towards her. “Raccoons.” She bit her lip, and started bawling. Her baby was eaten by raccoons, so she thought. The whole clan grieved for her that night, but Amber tried to stay positive. “We still have Blaze. And that’s a miracle.”

CHAPTER 7

“EVER AFTER?”

That night, Whisp told the two cats that she had seen all that they had done for the clan. Amber was introduced to all the clans as a Warrior. The hesitant jump had earned Amber her Warrior title; AmberStreak. From then on, TornadoTail and AmberStreak had an on and off relationship. They would go on small dates from time to time, and they would avoid each other time to time. But no matter what, these two cats had it good. Yeah! I know what you’re thinking, cat romance? Seriously? From the moment that I typed kissed you probably flipped your chair over or something. I promise It won’t be too mushy gushy at all. No, I swear on StarClan.

For the past moon, (about 3 after being named a Warrior) AmberStreak was feeling the blues. She always had stomach cramps and had a huge appetite. CuccumberWhisker still was having trouble deciding what she had a case of. TornadoTail was doing fine, but he had a slight fever.

CuccumberWhisker entered her den, where AmberStreak was sleeping until somebody found a cure. “I think I may have found out what’s wrong, and the cure is simple.” Cucumber meowed. “I think I want to share this with Tornado.” She said as she padded out of the den. Amber had always known what was wrong with her, she just could never tell anybody else. Then he saw two cats enter the den. She sat up when she saw TornadoTail look at her with running eyes. “How are you? Did you get rid of your fever?” she asked him, not too excited to get on with her sickness subject. “Alright, AmberStreak. I’ve made my brain think so hard it stopped working for some time, but I think I figured out what’s wrong! You’ve been abducted by aliens!” the den was quiet for a few moments. “Either that or,” she continued, “your pregnant!” TornadoTail glanced at Amber warily. “Surprise!” she mumbled. TornadoTail fainted. “You sure you haven’t been abducted by aliens?” the medicine cat asked. TornadoTail groaned.

The black Warrior woke up to the cold rush of ice water deposited onto his body. He gasped for breath and spit and spat. Then he glared at Amber. “How-cough-can you be-cough-preg-cough-nant?-cough-cough-cough.” AmberStreak sighed. “I don’t really know, and I don’t really care. All that I do know is that if Whisp finds out that I’m pregnant and I haven’t yet found a mate, when those kits are born they won’t see the light of day.” She mewed, her eyes clouded with sorrow. “Wait! I have an idea!” Tornado meowed very, very loudly. “That’s a first.” Cucumber mumbled. She was silenced by a glare from Tornado. “Anyways, since Amber doesn’t yet look like she ate a caribou,” the white and amber cat gave him a claw on his back. “I think we should tell Whisp that I am proposing to you! And then when you do look like you ate a…when your stomach is kinda big, she won’t suspect a thing!” he said, his tail held up proudly.  “That’s not a bad idea, jinxed!” Amber said as she leapt to her feet. “But before we plan it out, can we get something to eat? I’m starving!” ea

TornadoTail really was in love with AmberStreak. So, he thought hard of what he could do to make her happy when he proposed. So, he went to pick some flowers. That’s romantic, right? He supposed it was. He found a daisy patch. So, he started picking.

“Okay, if you’re going to be a mate soon, you’ll have to know the physics of TornadoTail. I’m his cousin. I’ve been around him long enough that I know a lot about him. Even though nobody really wants to. He. Well. I can’t even explain him!”

While the black cat was searching for the most vibrant and the most colorful daisies of them all, something violet caught his eye. It was something shaped like the light he had seen about three moons ago. The light was behind a wall of thorn bushes. He tried to find a detour around, but he couldn’t! The wall was too high! He couldn’t jump over it either! What was it? Was it a message from StarClan? What if it was for his clan, but it was on the other side of the border on accident! He wanted to get help. He also wondered if he should just ram through it. Was it a test? He tried anyways. Ouch. That wasn’t a good idea.

The pain yowl in the air gave all the cats in the camp a mysterious feeling. “That sounds like your cousin.” Amber meowed at Cucumber. She padded out of the medicine cat’s den and went straight for TornadoTail’s scent. “What trouble has Tornado gotten into this time?” she wondered as she sprinted to his rescue.

As Amber followed his trail, she wondered what he would be up to. “Saving his butt again. When will this cat learn to…” she stopped and stared. “TornadoTail, what is that?” she asked, sprinting to hide behind him. “I don’t know! I was wondering the same question, so I dove in to find out.” He mewed, trying to pick out all the thorns. “Let me guess, you thought it was a message from StarClan, and you thought that they wanted you to put up a fight to find out if it was.” She said, clearly confusing herself. He shook his head. Then he nodded. “Listen, how about we go to CuccumberWhisker to get you cleaned up, and ask her if she’s had any messages from them. Sound good?” He solemnly shook his head and started on his way. He wanted to know what that was, but he needed to focus on the big picture. Amber was still pregnant.

CHAPTER 6

“NINE LIVES”

Back at the camp, all the cats were freaked. It was about moonhigh, and the leader, nor the best Warrior, had arrived from when they left earlier.

TornadoTail was teaching Amber how to stalk prey at night, although AmberPaw just liked to watch her mentor. “… So, how do mice first learn someone is stalking them?” TornadoTail asked. Amber shook her head as if shaking water off. “B.” she meowed, her tail held high. “I wasn’t giving you multiple choices! What’s going on, you alright? You seem a bit distracted.” His voiced soothed Amber until she understood what they were saying. “What, no! I’m just a bit chilly, that’s all.” She replied, hoping that he would wrap his tail around her and comfort her until she felt better. But, apparently there isn't a faint trace of any form of Romeo in him. “Yeah, your right, we should get going.” He padded pass her and headed for the path. They walked, with TornadoTail in the lead, and Amber being the caboose, without stopping, until they reached the ThunderPath. “What is it? What’s the matter?” Amber asked, sniffing in the obvious fear scent in the breeze. The sun was starting to rise. “It’s sunrise, Tornado! Whisp will be worried!” Amber trailed off. “No, we should be worried about her.” TornadoTail meowed, staring down into the almost empty ThunderPath. She saw Tornado preparing to leap.  “What are you doing? Are you crazy?! You could die! Do you know how much you mean to me?” Amber hissed. He looked over his shoulder for a moment, and then leaped. Amber couldn’t believe he did that. She couldn’t believe that she said that! She didn't even know him yet! Oh well. Not long after Tornado took the suicidal jump, Amber did too. When she did an amazing thing happened. Time was frozen, Amber swore. As she glided along the air, she saw a black cat leaned over a white one. Whisp? When Amber reached the ground she scrabbled over to the motionless cats. “She’s lost a life.” It was TornadoTail. “The bridge was loose. We have to return her to camp before StarClan resumes the earth.” His eyes were clouded with grief. He got up and shook the dust off of him. Just then a neon pink light appeared. “What is that? Tornado?” Amber hissed at the silent cat. “No idea. No idea.” TornadoTail mumbled. It came towards Amber. She tried avoiding it best she could, but she couldn’t. It was too fast. Finally when the floating light cornered Amber against the ThunderPath border, it backed away and floated upwards. “What the heck is it doing? What is it?”Amber hissed again. When it was high in the misty sky, but still low enough for the cats to see it, a white light appeared around it and circled it, followed by many other white light streaks. “TornadoTail? Does it have anything to do with WhispStar’s lost life?” Amber asked. “Probably. I don’t know. She’s lost other lives. This has never happened before.” Apparently the shock got knocked out of him. The pink light disappeared, replaced by a white ball. The sphere was suddenly turning into a cat shaped light. The cat shaped light just turned into a cat. The two normal looking cats had no idea what to do. When the bright white mystery reached the ground she called out. “I am Mirage. I am AmberStre- I mean, AmberPaw’s guardian. I didn’t want her, or any one she cared about getting hurt on that jump.” TornadoTail gasped as Mirage walked closer to them. “You must be awful important to the clan, AmberPaw. Only the noblest Warriors have guardians. Thank StarClan that I have been given such an amazing apprentice to train.” TornadoTail meowed, shifting his eyes from Mirage to AmberPaw. Mirage gave him a nod. “It has been this way for many years, dear AmberPaw, or should I say Chip. I have been your guardian ever since you were born. I had known that you would come to live in the wild sooner or later. You will have quite a future togeth-here. You will have quite a future here.” She stopped, eyeing the motionless body. “But, for now, let’s focus on the present. Getting her home. Because of this moment, I will ask the rest of my clan to give you more time. I will travel back with you. Amber and I will take her home. You go and fetch any prey you can get, which is about any. But don’t forget to actually kill it. They may be motionless now, but when time resumes, they will crawl out of your prey pile.”Mirage meowed, her neon pink eyes gleamed with humor. As they lifted Whisp on their backs, Amber didn’t feel a thing. They even started walking and she didn’t even feel the earth under her paws. “Did we even get her on our backs?” Amber asked, trying to look over her shoulder. “Yes, silly! We started walking already!” Mirage mewed. As Mirage said that, Amber looked below her. “GAH!” she hissed as she jerked her head up to look forward only.

When they arrived at the camp, Amber sighed. “Will a new leader have to be chosen? No, wait, MelonBreeze will become leader. MelonStar. It has a nice ring to it.” Amber mumbled, half to herself. “No! This is one of Whisp’s lives she has lost. Each leader has nine lives given to them. I was a leader once. But I lost all nine and was chosen to be a guardian. Whisp has three lives left. She’s fine for now.” The two cats entered the leader’s den. They found her nest and lay her in it. “I’m sorry to say this, Amber, but you were responsible for this life she has lost.” The white apprentice stared at her in horror. “I was not! Then if I was, how did I do it? I was with TornadoTail the whole time!” she hissed at her “guardian”. “You are right. This happened when you were with TornadoTail.” She admitted. “Ha!” Amber snorted. “But when you tripped on the stone near the bridge, it loosened it. Whisp wanted to get across in just two leaps, so she leapt on to the weak spot and BAM! Right into the abyss of monsters.” Amber stared with wide green eyes. “Two things.” Amber meowed. Mirage nodded to go on. “One, will StarClan ever forgive me for this? And two, why was Whisp so impatient to cross in just two bounds?” Mirage answered. “Yes, StarClan forgives you. It was accidental. And it was partially her fault. But we will just have to move on from this.”  Amber saw Mirage look around. Then she left the leader’s den. She bounded up to the HighRock and gazed at all of the frozen cats. “May all frozen felines in this camp not remember anything that they remember about the absences of AmberPaw, TornadoTail, and WhispStar.” Amber heard these words and appeared from the leader’s den and gazed up at Mirage casting a spell. “And may the night of the Gathering,” she continued, “be as normal as it always is.” After she spoke these words a blue light appeared in the center of the camp. “Now, Amber? When TornadoTail comes back with plenty of prey, and you two are ready to resume this day, press your paw against this, alright?” Mirage asked, making AmberPaw feel overwhelmed. “Yes, Mirage.” She mewed. “See you soon, AmberPaw.” She said as she jumped into the light. Amber sighed and focused on the night ahead of her. On the HighRock, at the Gathering.

When TornadoTail appeared, Amber was sure relieved. But, he had no prey. “Hey, I need a little help carrying all the food I caught.” He wheezed between breaths. “Just use the wagon.” AmberPaw meowed simply, and walked away. “The what? I don’t usually do too much hunting. And if I do, I can carry it in my mouth. Now, show me this wagon.” Her mentor pleaded. “Alright. But we must hurry! If we don’t, time will resume on its own and everything will go wrong!” the she-cat hissed worriedly. “You sure know how to get into a man’s head, Amber.”Tornado meowed, trying to be humorous, but it was only a distraction to Amber. When she didn’t respond, the Warrior felt stupid. “Okay…”

After they got the wagons harnessed, they were off, with TornadoTail leading the way. “You know, you’ve got a big heart, Amber. Bigger than a Warrior’s. Well, I was wondering…” “Thank you TornadoTail, but flirting never got any work done. I’m flattered but, maybe after tonight, maybe never. Come on, let’s go.”Amber had made her point. Whatever point that was. “But I, I never asked her to, flirting, and flattered, and I’m just, so confused!” he stuttered as he staggered along.
After they gathered all of the prey and settled near the center of the camp, they both stared at the magnificent light. “Listen, Amber. I don’t really know what I said out there, and how stupid I sounded, but, whatever I did to make you upset and confused, well, I’m sorry.” The black cat gazed at her with please forgive me eyes. “And I’m sorry too. I thought it would take an army to do what two cats did. I was so caught up in the bad things and what had to be done I just forgot to look at the bright side.” She smiled and glanced at the Warrior when she said bright side. “So are you ready to resume?” Amber asked. “Almost. I have to do this sooner or later, and now’s a perfect time.” TornadoTail said, holding his gaze on the she-cat. He leaned over and kissed her. Amber couldn’t believe what was happening. She was having so many mixed emotions. He saw TornadoTail reach for the resume light. Part of her didn’t want him to; she just wanted to enjoy this. But, reality took over as she too reached for the light. Then it was all over.
